I already put in a SSD boot drive and am looking for a drive around 80-120GB with esata. For After Effects, there is a wide range of CPU options that might be great depending on exactly what you do. For general AE tasks, a CPU with high single-threaded performance and a moderate core count like the Core i7 8700K should give you the best possible performance.

Hi! I've been working/using my 2018 13' MacBook Pro (2.7Ghz i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655) for over a week now so I thought I'd write some thoughts about it, providing some help to those who are on the fence about it. Previously, I was running a Late 2013 15' MacBook Pro (2.0GHz i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB flash storage, Intel Iris Pro Graphics). I wanted a change because the previous MBP was running slower, some ports were wonky due to a fall, and I wanted something more portable.
Disclaimer though, I'm not really proficient with the hardware side of things concerning the machinery, so this review is coming from a layman point of a designer. I mainly use Adobe Ai/Ps/Id, and normal internet consumption.
I love it. It's well built, much lighter than my 2013 15', and a lot easier to carry around as well. Because of it's size and weight, finding a place to plonk it down and start working isn't that big of an issue too. From working on my table to shows on Netflix on my bed is really easy too.
The keyboard feels fantastic to type on and are definitely much softer. Trackpad's a lot bigger too but it hasn't caused any accidental clicks/scrolls/swipes so far, and still retains Apple's top-notch trackpad quality.
The Touch Bar though. While working with Adobe apps, not having a physical Esc key definitely took awhile to get used to. Also, I've accidentally loaded a command on the Touch Bar a few times while trying to press the delete key. I don't think it's going to be a pressing issue in the long run, but it was quite annoying the first few days.
The sound on this thing is amazing. I was initially really surprised by it's loudness, comparing it to my previous computer, and it's definitely cleaner and fuller. Great for Spotify and movie watching.
The screen is also pretty nice to look at, although I did turn off True Tone because I deal with colours more often than not on my laptop.
I got a Savfy 6-in-1Hub for the usb needs, and a Usb-c to Lightning cable to charge my iPhone. I work pretty much on the cloud so the lack of ports haven't been that big of an issue for me.
I do miss the MagSafe though.
TOUCH BAR
I was initially quite skeptical of the Touch Bar, but has since found myself using it more than the function keys on my previous computer. Aside from the brightness and volume changers, I customised it to add a Sleep button, Night Shift for when I want a comfortable web browsing experience, Do Not Disturb for when I'm presenting work and don't want random notifications popping up, and Screenshot (by selection, and copied) to send quick drafts.
Also, I have not updated to the new Mac OS either and will not until a new update of Adobe Zii is confirmed to work on both the new OS and Adobe CC 2019. Permalink embed. Reddit zii mac not working for photoshop 2019 tutorials.
Overall, I like it, and don't miss my function keys.
Web-browsing and Netflix-watching are enjoyable, and besides the Netflix Error I had the first few days, I haven't had into any problems. I did, however, had some freezing issues while running Popcorn Time, and have deleted the app since. (Note: I've since migrated to Safari since Chrome uses a lot more power.)
Startups/Restarts, opening/closing apps, and switching between desktops are fast without any lag.
I carry my laptop to work and back home everyday and the weight is an ease on my back ( I have scoliosis so heavy weight takes a toll), and bringing it around the office is also a lot more comfortable.
It gets lukewarm while watching videos/movies but I've never had it heat up to a point where it becomes uncomfortable on my lap, unlike the 2013 15'.
WORK (ADOBE CC)
As mentioned, Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign are the apps I use for work and it's definitely a step-up from the 2013 15'. As an example, I have a file which took 2-3mins to open up on the 2013 15', and dragging items around the artboards would heavily lag the machine. Some times Illustrator would crash when I try to click on a shape.
I haven't had any problems with that on the 2018 13'. The file load up pretty quickly as well.
Working on graphic intense projects would trigger the typhoon in the fans, but it's definitely much quieter than the 2013 15'. It would heat up quite a bit as well, but not a problem if it's on a table.
I was initially worried about the lack of dedicated GPU, but I'm able to do my work perfectly fine without it.
I did, however, get an upgrade to 16GB RAM to be on the safer side of things.
Comparing it to the 2013 15', I love that it's lighter and smaller. The portability is a huge pro for me which trumps the con in a smaller screen real estate.
As a standalone device, it runs great for my workflow and basic internet-needs.
As a result, running costs are ludicrously low at just 1.04p per page for mono and 1.43p for colour. Best home printer scanner reviews.
It is pricey though. But if it's able to hold up for another 5 years, I think it's pretty worth it.
